PLDT and Smart have boosted the University of Cebu’s (UC) first-ever virtual ICT Congress titled “UC Decodes AI! Embracing AI Synergies. Shaping Today’s Gen Z’s” through knowledge-sharing of modern-day technologies underscoring Artificial Intelligence’s (AI) impact on business and progress.

The university-led annual event was put on hold for two years, with the unprecedented global health crisis posing several challenges to various sectors, including the academe.

Atty. Ria Espina, UC’s Financial and Legal Affairs Director, opened the program by celebrating the university’s milestone of bringing back the congress despite the mandatory limitations. “I hope this congress will provide a productive venue for you to discuss fundamental changes, opportunities, and your role as players in digital technologies in the further development and betterment of our beloved country,” said Espina.

PLDT and Smart were represented by PLDT Technical Manager of Technology Strategy and Transformation Office Paul Edward Alvarez, who discussed AI’s impact on Business and Innovation in the congress. He encouraged the attendees especially students to start applying AI today, even in small steps.

He ended his presentation with a few reminders. “Always look for solutions to have a certain level of explainability. Artificial Intelligence Action cannot be a black box. Always incorporate ethics, data privacy, and security to name a few. And look for good partnerships like PLDT and Smart who are seriously looking into these capabilities. I am very excited to see what you will come up with,” said Alvarez.

The university’s deans, faculty members, and IT students from different campuses joined the congress. The Philippine Society of Information Technology Students was also in attendance.

“PLDT and Smart have always provided our students with the best. The knowledge provided by the company was timely and relevant specifically to our Third Year students who are currently taking up Design Thinking subjects. The inputs provided will sharpen their innovative ideas,” said Moma Ortega, University of Cebu-Banilad Campus College of Computer Science Dean.

PLDT and Smart’s support for the University of Cebu’s ICT Congress in 2022 proves its commitment to promoting digital inclusion. The initiative also aims to contribute to the achievement of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), particularly UN SDG #4 of providing quality education.
