In time for National Disaster Resilience Month, leading integrated telco network PLDT Inc (PLDT) and its wireless subsidiary Smart Communications, Inc (Smart) are boosting the country's culture of preparedness by extending their Business Continuity Awareness Program to cover not just their own employees and facilities but the community they serve as well.
Spearheaded by PLDT and Smart's Business Continuity and Resilience Office, the program was recently held at the La Union Cable Landing Station (LUCLS).
"With this program, we aim to inculcate the importance of Business Continuity, outline the roles and responsibilities of employees in the event of potential disruptions, and extend disaster preparedness to their families through the Resilient Citizen Program, which is also especially relevant as we enter the rainy season," said Analeen See Co, head of PLDT and Smart's BC Analytics and Strategy Division.

The LUCLS team has also committed to taking a more proactive approach to business continuity by raising disaster resilience awareness in their communities and conducting disaster preparedness sessions for residents in surrounding barangays.
“By actively engaging with the local community, we aim to enhance their understanding of disaster preparedness while fostering a culture of resilience and mutual support. This initiative is crucial for equipping both our employees and residents with the knowledge and skills to handle potential disasters. Moreover, it aligns with our commitment to the Environmental Compliance Certificate (ECC) from DENR-EMB, ensuring we provide a beneficial social development program that involves our employees, the host barangay, and affected communities,” said Jacques Dean O. Gutierrez Jr. Head of La Union International Cable Station Operations.
“For several years now, our Cable Landing team has been conducting Iwas Kable awareness campaigns in surrounding barangays, particularly those near the ocean. The main objective is to ensure the protection of our submarine cable systems and the fisherfolk because these cables are energized. Incorporating the Disaster Preparedness program with the Iwas Kable program further enhances the protection and deepens our commitment with the local community for a more mutually beneficial relationship with them.” said Anthony Gaba, Head of international & Core Network Operations.

The goal is to educate residents about the importance of cable landing stations and the potential impact of disruptions on critical communication infrastructure. This collaborative effort strengthens the overall resilience of the infrastructure and the communities that rely on it.
PLDT and Smart’s BCRO BC Awareness program supports the company’s thrust for resiliency and industry-leading operational excellence for enhanced stakeholder confidence.
These initiatives also align with PLDT Group’s commitment to support the Philippine government's overall digitalization thrust, as well as the country's attainment of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG) particularly on SDG No. 9 – Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure.
