PLDT Group’s Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Advocacy through Technology (IDEATe) program has been shortlisted at the 2024 Global Mobile (GLOMO) Awards.

The only Philippine entry nominated in this year’s GLOMOs, IDEATe is shortlisted under GLOMOs’ Best Use of Mobile for Accessibility and Inclusion category, which recognizes innovative programs, products and services that enhance accessibility and inclusivity for billions of people afflicted with disabilities, both physical and mental impairments, as well as older users.

The program provides trainings on assistive technology for the visually impaired to help them attain independent mobility and successful participation in the digital economy. Those with physical and psychosocial disabilities are supported with trainings on business basics and virtual tech-related jobs towards entrepreneurship and employment. IDEATe also raises awareness of PLDT and Smart employees and partners on disability sensitivity.

“During its pilot implementation in 2023, IDEATe benefited over 100 visually and physically impaired participants, equipping them with smartphone accessibility, digital business basics, and remote tech job skills. The program not only bolstered digital skills, but also fostered a strong sense of community and empowerment among people with disabilities,” said Stephanie V. Orlino, AVP for Stakeholder Management at PLDT and Smart. “PLDT and Smart have also implemented the program to benefit women at risk, the elderly, religious minorities, and Indigenous Peoples (IPs).”

According to the Philippine National Council on Disability Affairs, there are about 1.5M registered PWDs in the Philippines, as of January 2024.

Held annually, the GLOMOs are considered as the connectivity industry’s most prestigious accolade, judged by the telco sector’s most prominent experts. Winners will be announced during the GLOMO awarding ceremony on February 28, 17:30 - 18:30 CET, to be held alongside the Mobile World Congress 2024 in Barcelona, Spain.

Since 2017, PLDT and Smart have been promoting digital inclusion of underserved communities, through the upskilling of senior citizens, farmers and fisherfolk, indigenous peoples, and persons with disabilities. Through IDEATe, PLDT and Smart aim to contribute to the achievement of UNSDG #1: No Poverty, #8: Decent Work and Economic Growth and UNSDG #10: Reduced Inequalities by empowering and promoting the social, economic and political inclusion of all, including persons with disabilities.
