PLDT and its wireless unit Smart Communications Inc. have deployed quick-response communications and relief assistance to residents in communities affected by the series of earthquakes that hit Cotabato starting October 29.
Smart has set up a Libreng Tawag (free calls) station at the municipal grounds of Tulunan, where the magnitude 6.6 earthquake first struck, and in nearby Makilala town.
As buildings have been damaged by the earthquakes, Smart also turned over to the Kidapawan City government tents to be used as temporary local government offices and makeshift rooms for patients at the local hospital.
Meanwhile, PLDT and Smart's social outreach arm PLDT-Smart Foundation (PSF) are set to distribute hygiene kits to the affected residents and "Sacks of Joy" school supply packages to students. PLDT and Smart are also joining relief efforts spearheaded by Tulong Kapatid, a consortium of the foundations of the companies led by businessman Manuel V. Pangilinan.
These efforts are all part of Smart’s #SafePH program, which promotes preparedness and immediate response through network resilience, continuous availability of communication services, and mobile solutions and activities that help communities mitigate disaster risks.
