Exploring alternative solutions to expand their network and serve their customers better, PLDT Inc (PLDT) and its wireless arm Smart Communications, Inc (Smart) recently tested Radisys Fixed Wireless Access (FWA), the latest and fastest technology that could serve as an alternative for fiber-to-the-home (FTTH), particularly in areas where it is difficult to roll out fiber.

Spearheaded by its Network Strategy and Architecture team, this initiative is the latest milestone in PLDT's continued search for new technologies to help improve internet coverage and customer experience in the country. The solution's point-to-multipoint FWA technology is a potential alternative for FTTH, particularly in areas where it is challenging to roll out fiber. The solution, which works like a cell site, features a single base node which can establish connections to specialized remote radio nodes located in customer premises, such as buildings and households. With Radisys FWA, PLDT can deliver "fiber-like" speeds over-the-air, enabling customers to enjoy fast internet connectivity in an instant.

During the tests, PLDT was able to successfully test services like video streaming, internet browsing, and accessing mobile apps like YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram. From L-R: Francisco Mangaliman, Manager, Network Strategy and Transformation Office; Lennart Olaivar, AVP and Head of Wireless Network Strategy and Transformation Office; Martin Larrie Navarro from Achieve Without Borders (AWB), local partner of Radisys in the Philippines; and Radames Zalameda, VP and Head of Wireless Network Strategy and Architecture.

During the tests, PLDT was able to achieve 945Mbps download speeds and 929Mbps upload speeds, as well as successfully tested services like video streaming, internet browsing, YouTube, Tiktok, Facebook, and Instagram, among others. This Proof of Concept (POC) is the latest in PLDT's series of technology POCs, which includes the Philippines' first testing of 50G Passive Optical Network (PON) technology in 2023. 50GPON allows PLDT to provide 50Gbps service whenever demand requires.

“Fixed Wireless Access using Radisys technology has already been deployed successfully in large markets like India. We saw a strong opportunity to adopt and tailor this proven solution for the Philippine setting, especially in areas where laying down fiber remains a challenge," said Radames Zalameda, VP and Head of Wireless Network Strategy and Architecture.

“This point-to-multipoint solution offers a simpler, faster way to deploy high-speed connectivity—without the need for extensive civil works. It delivers fiber-like speeds over the air, making it an ideal option in hard-to-reach or underserved areas," said Lennart Olaivar, AVP and Head of Wireless Network Strategy and Transformation Office.

“At PLDT and Smart, we believe that fast, reliable connectivity is a key driver of national progress. To help bridge the digital divide and ensure no Filipino is left offline, especially in underserved and geographically isolated communities (GIDAs), we must stay at the forefront of innovation. We explore and test next-generation technologies like Fixed Wireless Access not for novelty, but to meaningfully improve the customer experience and support the country’s broader digitalization goals. This is how we contribute to inclusive, future-ready nation-building," said Menardo G. Jimenez, Network Head at PLDT and Smart.

PLDT’s push to lead in next-generation technologies reflects the Group’s broader commitment to elevating customer experience and expanding digital access nationwide. As of end-March 2025, PLDT operates the country’s most extensive fiber infrastructure, spanning over 1.2 million cable kilometers. This robust network also underpins Smart’s mobile coverage, which reaches 97% of the Philippine population.

These ongoing initiatives support the PLDT Group’s mission to close connectivity gaps and make digital services more inclusive. They align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal No. 9 – Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure – and strengthen the Group’s contribution to the national digital agenda.
