PLDT and its wireless unit Smart Communications Inc. (Smart) are reinforcing support for micro-, small-, and medium-sized enterprises and farmers to help them thrive in the digital space, through access to technology and information.
In a recent webinar organized by Global Compact Network Philippines (GCNP) titled, "Empowering MSMEs in Achieving Zero Hunger," PLDT and Smart Stakeholder Management Head Stephanie V. Orlino emphasized the importance of digital skills, access to technology, and market reach for MSMEs to achieve sustainable growth.
“At PLDT and Smart, we implement shared value programs that focus on the digital divide. One of our focus sectors are MSMEs because they make up over 90% of businesses in the Philippines and therefore contribute significantly to the economy and job creation,” Orlino said during the webinar, which was livestreamed on GCNP's Facebook page.
Among the programs featured in the online session was PLDT and Smart’s eBizNovation, which provides access to technology and upskilling trainings, and helps onboard MSMEs and farmers to e-commerce platforms. PLDT and Smart have previously partnered with the Department of Trade and Industry, Department of Agriculture, local chambers of commerce, and various e-commerce platforms for this program.
"Under our eBizNovation program, we build the skills of our partner MSMEs on social media marketing. Then we help them take the next step by onboarding them to e-commerce platforms. Through the program, we help them expand their market reach, generate more income, and thrive in the digital age," said Orlino.
"As the Philippines largest integrated telecommunications and digital services company, we recognize our role in championing digital inclusion. This means leveraging on our network and our digital services to ensure that no one is left behind," she added.
PLDT and Smart are co-chairs of the Planet Pillar of GCNP, the local entity of the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC). The world’s largest corporate sustainability initiative, UNGC calls on companies to adhere to the 10 universal principles on human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption, and help advance society through achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
PLDT and Smart’s support for MSMEs and farmers underscores the group's commitment toward nation-building and is in line with UN Sustainable Development Goals 1: No Poverty; and 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth.
