In June 2022, PLDT, the largest fully integrated telco in the Philippines, and its wireless unit Smart Communications, Inc., reaffirmed their commitment to the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) in their second Communication on Progress (CoP) report. This is as the companies further embed sustainability into the corporate culture while enabling the Filipinos’ tomorrow -- through customer-focused digital innovations that unlock their unlimited potential.
“At the heart of PLDT and Smart’s sustainability journey lies our long-standing purpose of connecting and empowering Filipinos everywhere, consequently contributing to the country’s sustainable development. By tightly linking sustainability to our core values, operational decisions, as well as products and services, we are creating lasting value for our stakeholders in a way that benefits the wider society,” said Alfredo S. Panlilio, PLDT and Smart President and CEO.
The second CoP also backs the PLDT Group’s endeavors in anchoring initiatives on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG), particularly on SDG No. 9 – Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure.
“PLDT and Smart’s second CoP report highlights progress made in incorporating the Ten Principles of the UNGC and outlines our efforts in supporting and upholding universally accepted principles in the areas of human rights, labor, environment, and anti-corruption,” stated Melissa V. Vergel de Dios, Chief Sustainability Officer.
In 2021, the Group pursued different sustainability initiatives under four pillars – connection, concern, conservation, commitment – to foster integrated thinking in creating shared value for stakeholders.
Since joining the UN Global Compact in 2020, PLDT and Smart have been proud to be part of a global movement of sustainable companies and stakeholders. By adopting a principles-based approach to sustainability, PLDT and Smart are taking shared responsibility for achieving a better world.
As the only Philippine telecommunications companies with Participant status under the world’s largest voluntary corporate sustainability initiative, PLDT and Smart were able to actively engage with the UNGC at the global level, joining around 17,000 companies from over 160 countries and committed to supporting sustainable business practices in line with the UNGC principles.
With the support of the Board led by Chairman Manuel V. Pangilinan, PLDT and Smart President and CEO Alfredo S. Panlilio has identified sustainability as one of the key drivers of performance of PLDT’s vision and strategy and aims to propel PLDT to be the leading ESG telco in the region.
