Leading integrated telco network PLDT Inc (PLDT) and its wireless subsidiary Smart Communications, Inc (Smart) are urging their subscribers in Mindanao to remain vigilant against suspicious, telco service-related incidents in their respective areas, including the theft of and damage to cables and other telco equipment, which is among the leading causes of service disruptions.

"We must come together and work hand-in-hand to safeguard our neighborhoods from these incidents and help ensure that our families, friends and communities stay connected," said Alan Abrina, Customer Service South Mindanao Area Head at PLDT.

This is in line with recent cable theft incidents in Davao City and Ozamiz City, which have led to service interruptions and hampered repairs. The telco has continued to work with local authorities, leading to the apprehension of perpetrators.

Earlier, PLDT had also urged its customers and communities to work closely with authorities against scammers misrepresenting themselves as PLDT personnel, particularly in relation to incidents in Davao del Norte.

In addition to reporting to local authorities, persons who would like to report such incidents can also do so via PLDT's Hotline 164 - just call "164" from any landline or mobile phone, regardless of network.

When reporting incidents such as cable breakage or other incidents, customers are requested to provide the following information: a brief description of the incident, date and time of discovery, and exact location (barangay, town/city, province), and their name and contact details (mobile or landline number, email address). A landmark or photo indicating the place of incident will also be helpful. Other relevant information may be asked when necessary, in the course of the investigation.

These initiatives to encourage community vigilance and to protect physical infrastructure are part of PLDT’s continuing efforts to further enhance the quality of customer experience. PLDT operates the country's most extensive fiber infrastructure, which spanned over 1.1 million kilometers as of end-March 2024. This fiber infrastructure also supports Smart's mobile network.
