More micro-, small-, medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) and freelancers can now harness the power of artificial intelligence (AI) to scale up their business, with PLDT and Smart’s new ‘AI-in-a-Box’ training program.
“Technology is a game-changer,” said Stephanie V. Orlino, AVP and Head of Stakeholder Engagement at PLDT and Smart. “For small business owners and independent service providers, AI adoption can amplify reach and income potential.”
The quick-fire workshop, facilitated by MK Bertulfo, Founder and CEO of Filipina Homebased Moms, Inc (FHMoms, Inc.), trained participants on using large language models to answer inquiries, develop content like brochures and ads, and refine text materials. The program also covered generative AI for design, music, and videos, utilizing a hands-on approach aimed at turning creativity into opportunity.
This new initiative builds on the PLDT Group’s previous partnership with FHMoms, Inc. which equipped persons with disabilities and people caring for them, with practical digital skills that can help them become digital entrepreneurs, or land virtual assistance jobs.
Daryl Torres, co-founder of a Filipino condiments brand, pointed out several possibilities in the new technology, “AI has been a great help. In fact, our logo was designed with the help of AI. Every day, we post on our social media page. So, it’s a must that we regularly create content that attracts potential customers and drives engagement.”
Maria Kristina Bari, a freelance event coordinator, said AI has opened the door wider for creating custom elements, “Now, I can create original music that we can use at weddings or in our event videos.”
AI-in-a-Box equips communities and organizations with essential tools, training, connectivity, and on-ground support to harness AI to run more responsive and efficient services. Designed to help bridge the digital divide, it complements PLDT and Smart’s eBizNovation and IDEATe (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Advocacy through Technology) programs. By leveraging technology, AI-in-a-Box supports the vision of a future where AI is not just a tool—but a catalyst for building smarter, more inclusive, and more resilient communities.
These mutually reinforcing initiatives align with PLDT and Smart’s efforts to help the nation meet UNSDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) and UNSDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities) by giving more Filipinos the digital skills they need to thrive.
