PLDT and its wireless unit Smart Communications, Inc. are ramping up their sustainability initiatives. In partnership with the Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Training Institute and the Mennonite Economic Development Associates, the Group is set to equip cacao farmers with digital technology while promoting sustainable farming practices for the cacao industry in Mindanao.
Jhomar Pablo, field supervisor at cacao agribusiness company Kenner Food International, Inc., believes that initiatives like these could go a long way for both the cacao industry and the environment. For him, the introduction of technology-aided farming through the Digital Farmers Program (DFP) will not only open up more opportunities for farmers but will also help promote sustainable agriculture.
“As someone who has worked in the farming industry for some time now, I am grateful that PLDT and Smart are creating opportunities for farmers to thrive and become agents of a sustainable future for our planet,” he added.
For several years, PLDT and Smart have empowered communities nationwide through its #FarmSmart initiative. Under the DFP, farmers will have access to relevant digital tools to advance their farming methods. The group’s #PlantSmart program, on the other hand, enables communities to create their own sustainable gardens at home and at school.
PLDT and Smart are committed to empowering more farming communities and pushing for a more sustainable future for every Filipino. These programs are also aligned with the PLDT Group’s commitment to help achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, namely 2: Zero Hunger; 3: Good Health and Well-Being; 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, and 12: Responsible Consumption and Production.
