PLDT and Smart, in partnership with DTI Misamis Oriental, educate the public on spotting online scams and protecting personal data as part of the #BeCyberSmart advocacy supporting digital literacy and consumer protection.
Over 400 residents from Misamis Oriental learned more about online security through PLDT Inc. and its wireless arm, Smart Communications, Inc.’s #BeCyberSmart advocacy. The campaign, organized in partnership with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) – Misamis Oriental under its Consumer Protection Education Program, aims to raise awareness on internet safety and empower communities to guard against digital scams.
“Through our #BeCyberSmart advocacy, we aim to equip communities with the knowledge and vigilance needed to thrive in a digital world,” said Judee Caroline Chaves, Mindanao Relations Head, PLDT & Smart. “We believe that by promoting awareness and vigilance, we can help Filipinos protect themselves and their loved ones from online threats.”
The caravan reached various municipalities and cities including El Salvador, Gingoog, Villanueva, Laguindingan, Libertad, Opol, and Alubijid. Participants were educated on different types of scams including love scams, pyramid schemes, identity theft, credit card fraud, and vishing. They also learned practical ways to spot red flags, secure their devices, and protect their social media accounts from hacking attempts.
“DTI is grateful for its partnership with PLDT and Smart, and for the opportunity it creates to further educate consumers about their rights and responsibilities,” said Loraine C. Brillantes, OIC–Division Chief of DTI Misamis Oriental. “PLDT and Smart’s expertise in internet safety adds invaluable strength to this collaboration and supports our shared goal of ensuring informed and protected consumers,” she added.
This joint initiative supports PLDT and Smart’s commitment to help achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 9 – Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, and SDG 16 – Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, by promoting digital literacy, online safety, and consumer empowerment across communities.
